I feel that I’ve finally made my parents proud after all their years of hard work and that too in front of the CFO of HUL and top finance managers by topping the HUL FinAce 2018.
Competitions are by far the easiest way to understand what everyday work will be like after graduating from B-school. I decided to participate in FinAce ‘18 because it’s the most premier finance competition around and very close to a role which I would like to settle down for in the future.
We as a team literally spent 2-3 weeks together day and night to arrive at the perfect solution. What helped us a lot was our interaction with friends who did not participate in the competition but brought in fresh perspectives. When you work on a case for 2 to 3 weeks, your mind gets saturated and you run out of fresh ideas, so you constantly need to be interactive to explore all the angles of the issue.
Being a part of a team, we always had conflicting ideas but we had a lot of mutual respect. So instead of trying to fight with each other, we focused on the problem and in fact, we came up with excellent solutions because of investigating and challenging each other.
We complimented each other’s strengths and weaknesses really well. What really drove was a passion to succeed and whatever obstacles arose was thwarted because of that. We kept pushing each other way past our limits and we never restricted ourselves.
There were 10 teams in the National Final round. We were not allowed to see the presentations made by the other teams so we do not exactly know which of the team was our toughest competitor but given their reputation, they were all really good.
HUL lived up to its reputation of being one of the best company to work for. It was extremely well-organized firm and jam-packed with employees. FinAce ‘18 also happened to be a superbly executed competition. We just didn’t attend some competition, we had a glimpse of the life at HUL.
In my view, the biggest takeaway from the whole competition was about pushing myself beyond my preconceived capabilities and with a constant perseverance and team effort was able to succeed in it.
